The use of fieldbus technology has been a significant development in the past few years. It has made\u00a0 possible to migrate from centralized automation systems to decentralized ones. PROFIBUS, as the global market leader, has set the benchmark here for 25 years. In today\u2019s automation technology, Ethernet and information technology (IT) are increasingly calling the shots with established standards like TCP\/IP and XML.<br \/>\nIntegrating information technology into automation opens up significantly better communication options among automation systems, extensive configuration and diagnostic possibilities, and network-wide service functionality.<br \/>\nThese functions have been integral components of PROFINET from the outset. PROFINET is the\u00a0<strong>innovative<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>open standard<\/strong>\u00a0for Industrial Ethernet.<br \/>\nPROFINET satisfies all requirements of automation technology; whether the application involves\u00a0<strong>production automation<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>process automation<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>drives<\/strong>\u00a0(with or without functional safety), PROFINET is the first choice across the board. As a technology that is standard in the automotive industry, widely disseminated in machine building, and well-proven in the food and packaging and logistics industries, PROFINET has found its way into all application areas.<br \/>\nNew application areas are constantly emerging, such as\u00a0<strong>marine<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>rail<\/strong>\u00a0applications or even day-to-day operations, for example, in a\u00a0<strong>beverage<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>shop<\/strong>. And now: the new PROFIenergy technology profile will improve the energy balance in production processes. PROFINET is standardized in\u00a0<strong>IEC 61158<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>IEC 61784<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe ongoing further development of PROFINET offers users a long-term view for the implementation of their automation tasks.<br \/>\nFor plant and machine manufacturers, the use of PROFINET\u00a0<strong>minimizes the costs<\/strong>\u00a0for installation, engineering, and commissioning.<br \/>\nFor plant owners, PROFINET offers\u00a0<strong>ease of plant expansion<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>high plant availability<\/strong>\u00a0due to autonomously running plant units and low maintenance requirements. These provide a practical summary of the various minimum properties.<br \/>\nThere are three conformance classes that build upon one another and are oriented to typical applications.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-518\" style=\"width: 616px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-518\" src=\"https:\/\/eltra.bfenterprise.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Profinet-CC.jpg\" alt=\"Profinet CC\" width=\"616\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eltra.bfenterprise.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Profinet-CC.jpg 616w, https:\/\/eltra.bfenterprise.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Profinet-CC-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eltra.bfenterprise.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Profinet-CC-600x283.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Profinet conformance classes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>CC-A<\/strong>\u00a0provides\u00a0<strong>basic functions<\/strong>\u00a0for PROFINET IO with RT communication. All IT services can be used without restriction. Typical applications are found, for example, in business automation. Wireless communication is specified for this class.<br \/>\n<strong>CC-B<\/strong>\u00a0extends the concept to include<strong>\u00a0network diagnostics<\/strong>\u00a0via IT mechanisms as well as topology information. The system redundancy function important for process automation is contained in an extended version of CC-B named CC-B(PA).<br \/>\n<strong>CC-C<\/strong>\u00a0describes the basic functions for devices with hardware-supported bandwidth reservation and synchronization (<strong>IRT communication<\/strong>) and is thus the basis for\u00a0<strong>isochronous<\/strong>\u00a0applications.<\/p>\n<p>The conformance classes also serve as the basis for the certification and the cabling guidelines.<br \/>\nA detailed description of the CCs can be found in the document\u00a0<em>\u201cThe PROFINET IO Conformance Classes\u201d [7.042]<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The PROFINET concept was defined in close collaboration with end users based on standard Ethernet according to\u00a0<strong>IEEE 802<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>IEC 61158<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>IEC 61784<\/strong>. Figure below lists additional specifications of the functionalities in the form of different joint profiles. These form the basis for device or application-specific profiles. This is comparable to a class 1 master in<br \/>\nPROFIBUS. The IO controller provides output data to the configured IO devices in its role as provider and is the consumer of input data of\u00a0 IO devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IO Device<\/strong>: an IO device is a distributed I\/O field device that is connected to one or more IO controllers via PROFINET IO. It is comparable to the function of a slave in PROFIBUS. The IO device is the provider of input data and the consumer of output data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IO Supervisor<\/strong>: this can be a Programming Device (PD), personal computer (PC), or human machine interface (HMI) device for commissioning or diagnostic purposes and corresponds to a class 2 master in PROFIBUS.<\/p>\n<p>A plant unit contains at least one IO controller and one or more IO devices.
